What is it?
Breast augmentation is a cosmetic procedure consisting on enhancing the size and shape of human breasts. It is among the most popular plastic surgery procedures worldwide. It is also known as augmentation mammoplasty or the more common term boob job.
The most common reason for undergoing a breast augmentation surgery is the desire to attain a more balanced and attractive body figure. But breast enlargement is not only performed for cosmetic reasons. It can also be part of a reconstructive surgery (for example, after removal of mammary tissue due to cancer treatment or other trauma) or of male-to-female sex reassignment surgery.
How is it done?
Breast augmentation surgery involves insertion of breast implants into the body at breast level, either above or beneath the pectoralis muscle. Implants can be placed through three types of incision: a circular one, around the nipple or periareolar incision; a crescent-shaped one beneath the breast or inframmamary incision; or a curved one on the armpit or transaxillary incision. The surgical procedure is usually performed under general anesthesia and takes between one and two hours.
