Breast Implants

What are they?

Breast implants are prosthesis used in breast augmentation surgery. They differ in several aspects, most notably:

Physical aspects:

  • Type of surface: Smooth or textured.
  • Filler: Silicone or saline (both saline and silicone-filled implants have silicone shells).

Surgical aspects:

  • Position: Subglandular (placed over the muscle); partial submuscular (only upper part is placed beneath the muscle) and submuscular (placed beneath the muscle).
  • Incision: Inframammary (beneath the breasts), periareolar (around the nipple), transaxillary (on the armpit).

Which implant is for me?

Excellent results can be achieved by either silicone or saline implants, but It is very important to select the most appropriate for your case. Different implants are usually placed through different types of incision and therefore involve certain postsurgical aspects. For example, silicone implants are usually placed using inframammary incisions, because they require longer cuts to be placed. These incisions cause more visible scarring than, for example, armpit incisions.

Here are the general characteristics of each type of implant, but do keep in mind that their results and impact on your body would be a combination of different factors.

  • Saline implants require smaller incisions because they are initially empty. They are only filled after the implant is placed in the body. Because of this, they present a smaller scar than silicone gel implants. However, saline implants are more likely to be noticeable to the touch or eye. They display best results in patients with more breast tissue and are better placed as a submuscular breast implant. Their size can be adjusting adding more saline liquid or removing some of it. Saline breast implants are usually placed only in the submuscular position.
  • Silicone implants have been improved over the years, becoming both softer and resistant han saline implants. They have less tendency of rippling and wrinkling. They are recommended for patients with little breast tissue, or for breast reconstruction. They offer a more natural look. Their size can’t be changed. Silicon breast implants can be placed in any position.
