Breast Reduction
What is it?
Breast reduction, or reduction mammoplasty, consists of the cosmetic surgery procedures performed to reduce the size of breasts. It can help alleviate physical pain and other complications associated with large breast size and improve overall health conditions. Also, this type of surgery can help to restore self confidence.
How is it done?
Breast reduction surgery is most commonly performed using three incisions: one around the areola, another from the areola to the breast crease, and another underneath the crease, following its natural curve. Through these incisions, glandular tissue and fat can be removed. Nipples are shifted to a higher position, although remaining attached to the underlying tissue. The size of areolae can be reduced. Finally, excess skin is discarded and the incisions sutured.
Breast reduction is often performed under general anesthesia. In men, the procedure can sometimes be performed through smaller incisions causing only minimal scaring. Just as in other types of reduction surgery, breast reduction is performed usually by a combination of techniques, including liposuction. Choice of an adequate technique highly depends on each patient’s case.
Is it for me?
Breast reduction is a common option for patients who feel discomfort about the size of their breasts. Typically, breast reduction surgery is recommended for:
- Women who suffer from physical discomfort, especially in the back, neck and shoulders, due to large size of breasts.
- Patients with one breast larger than the other.
- Patients with pendular breasts.
- Patients with areolas or nipples pointing downwards.
- Men with gynecomastia.
In all cases, patient’s breasts should have attained full development.
Please bear in mind that this is a general list of typical conditions treated by breast reduction surgery, and that whether you are a good candidate for breast reduction surgery highly depends on your particular case.
