Gynecomastia

What is it?

Gynecomastia is a condition described by the presence of large mammary glands in men. It is caused by various factors, ranging from the passing of female hormones from mother to newborn, obesity in adolescents and adults, or an imbalance of sex hormones.

This condition is different from the enlargement of the pectoralis muscles induced by exercising.

How is it treated?

Gynecomastia is usually treated first through medication. If after two or three years no satisfactory results are attained, then it is possible to consider a cosmetic surgery procedure known as male breast reduction. This procedure can be performed by liposuction, excision of glandular tissue, skin sculpture, mammoplasty, or even a combination of these.

Is treatment for me?

Treatment for gynecomastia should be considered carefully and in all cases be advised by a specialist. In many cases it is not even necessary. For example, in adolescents whose condition is not caused by obesity, gynecomastia disappears within a few years. The best way to find out if a gynecomastia is advisable in your case is to ask for a personalized evaluation. Read below for details.
