Tummy Tuck

What is it?

Tummy Tuck, or abdominoplasty, is the surgical procedure performed to attain a flatter and firmer abdomen. It consists of the removal of abdominal loose skin and excess fat, and the stretching of abdominal muscles. Tummy tucks can be complete or partial.

How is it done?

Complete tummy tucks are done with a long curved incision over the pubic area. This incision allows to fold a portion of abdominal skin, remove fat and loose skin, and reposition and tighten abdominal muscles. The surgical procedure can take between one and five hours.

Partial tummy tucks, also called mini-tucks or mini-tuck abdominoplasty, involve a smaller incision, less fat and tissue removals, and can take between one and two hours.

Tummy tucks are usually performed with liposuction to help sculpt the body after fat removal, but the adequacy of this procedure highly depends on each patient’s case.

Is it for me?

Tummy tucks are usually performed in patients who have abdominal loose skin due to:

  • Pregnancy. In this case, patients usually present stretched abdominal muscles that can also be corrected in surgery.
  • Major weight loss. In this case, excess body fat resistent to excercise can also be present, and can also be removed.
  • Normal aging. Saggy abdominal skin can also be removed in many older patients.

In any case, good candidates should have an overall good health condition. You will be advised on the tummy tuck technique that is most adequate for your case upon consultation. Please read below for details.
