Lasik
What is it?
Lasik is a type of laser eye surgery performed for correcting ophthalmic conditions such as myopia, astigmatism and hyperopia. It is a popular alternative to eye glasses and contact lenses.
How is it done?
The operation is performed while the patient is awake, though sedative and anesthetics are provided. First the eye is immobilized and a flap is created on the corneal tissue. Then, the flap is folded back and the cornea is remodeled underneath this tissue with a laser that vaporizes thin layers of tissue without affecting adjacent areas. Finally the flap is repositioned. The flap will remain in position until natural healing is complete.
Is it for me?
Keep in mind that lasik is nor for everyone. Ideal candidates must meet certain criteria:
- Having had a stable vision during the last year. This means that glass or contact lenses prescription should not have changed. Very young people may not be good candidates and should wait until their twenties before considering laser eye surgery.
- Having a moderate prescription. Lasik is not advisable when having very high levels of astigmatism or myopia, whose correction would require removal of too much corneal tissue.
- Having healthy eyes. Certain eye conditions are automatic disqualifiers: cataracts, keratoconus or uncontrolled glaucoma. Other conditions such as conjunctivitis or dry eyes should be resolved before considering surgery.
- Not having autoinmune or degenerative diseases such as type 1 diabetes, HIV, or rheumatoid arthritis, among others. This is because your body cells should be able to heal properly to repair eye tissue after surgery. However, the criteria on which conditions are disqualifiers may vary among different professionals.
- Not being pregnant. This is mainly for two reasons: Because hormones produced during pregnancy can destabilize vision, and because some medications prescribed can risk your baby’s health. You should wait several months after pregnancy before considering lasik surgery.
